Drivers can expect single-lane closures in both direction on Park Avenue this week as the Regional Transportation Direction tests light-rail trains through Denver’s Five Points neighborhood ahead of the L Line’s return later this month.
RTD will be running trains at various times in both directions along Welton Street between the 20th/Welton and 30th/Downing stations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. this week, starting Monday, according to the transit agency.
The trains are being run to make sure new safety improvements are ready for the L Line to resume service on Sept. 29. The L Line has been shut down since May as part of a $152 million RTD reconstruction project.
The improvements along Welton Street are designed to reduce the potential for crashes at intersections, RTD said, by upgrading train warning signals to better alert drivers and pedestrians of approaching light-rail trains.
RTD in May suspended its downtown light-rail service, including the D and H lines, as part of a major, months-long overhaul of the 30-year-old track system.
