How to Play Connections

If you’re new to Connections, you’ll get the hang of it quickly.

Players receive 16 words that connect to each other in groups of four. Players have to select the words based on the category they fit into. For example, in Saturday’s puzzle, one of the categories was “Wine Bottle Info,” and the words associated with that category were “region,” “vintage,” “winery,” and “grape.”

But, watch out, some connect in more ways than one. Sometimes a word will look like it belongs in two different groups, and that can throw players off.

The categories for the words range in difficulty. Yellow is the easiest group and purple is the most difficult. Green and blue categories are both considered to be medium difficulty.

Players choose the words they think belong in the same category and press “Submit.” If they are correct, the words will flash in the category color and disappear from the board. If they are incorrect, the words will remain gray in color, stay on the grid, and the player will lose a turn.

Players are out after four incorrect guesses, but there is no time limit, so if you’re feeling frustrated, just take a step away and come back later. Or read below for some hints.

Additionally, for players feeling stuck, they can click the “Shuffle” button, which might just give them the refresh they need to find a correct answer.
