One person was found dead inside a Connecticut home following a “suspicious” fire, while another was found suffering from severe burns in the woods nearby, according to state police.

Firefighters responded to the blaze in Thompson — located some 50 miles outside Hartford — on Wednesday around 10:55 p.m., NBC Connecticut reported.

When they arrived on the scene, first responders quickly requested assistance from officers with the Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, who ultimately labeled the house fire “suspicious in nature,” state police said.

Authorities did not provide details about what may have sparked the flames, nor what evidence they uncovered to suggest the fire had nefarious origins.

Amid the investigation, which dragged into Thursday morning, authorities found a man with serious burn injuries about 200 feet into woods on the property. LifeStar was called to the scene and he was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment.

His name has not been released and his condition was unclear as of Friday afternoon.

Another person was found dead inside the home on Quaddick Town Farm Road, police said. The remains have since been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy and identification.

“This is all the information we have available for release at this time,” state police said in a statement to Patch. “The investigation is still active and ongoing and further information will be released as it becomes available.”

Authorities further noted that “the area surrounding the scene has been cordoned off” while officers work to learn more about the deadly blaze.
