“This is an ACTIVE SCENE and is NOT SAFE,” the Broomfield Police Department said in a statement on social media at 8:07 a.m. “…Shots are still being fired.”

Shots were fired at the Arista Flats apartment complex in Broomfield on Thursday, near the 1stBankCenter and just south of the UCHealth Broomfield Hospital, police said.

One mile east of the shooting, Jefferson Academy Secondary School is on secure status, vice principal Marti Porreco said. It’s business as usual within the building, but the school isn’t letting anyone in or sending any students home.

Reverse emergency notifications were sent to residents in the area to shelter in place and limited evacuations have been done, police said. People should avoid the area.
