Deputies arrest suspected thieves within fire evacuation warning zone, free wild opossums

US

A bizarre arrest unfolded Wednesday morning in an area under an evacuation warning due to the Bridge Fire after deputies allegedly found two people in possession of drugs, evidence of theft and multiple wild opossums in their vehicle.

Around 2:30 a.m., deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department who were patrolling the Mt. Baldy and San Antonio Heights areas approached a “suspicious vehicle” that was illegally parked within the evacuation zone.

Inside the vehicle, deputies found Ontario residents Vincent Olivas, 32, and Melissa Segura, 23.

Sheriff’s officials said the two were found to be in possession of suspected fentanyl, drug paraphernalia, items that indicated they were in the area to commit theft, and several wild opossums that they’d grabbed from the wilderness.

Road closures were implemented as residents were evacuated from the Wrightwood and Mt. Baldy areas due to the Bridge Fire on September 10, 2024. (KTLA)

Olivas and Seguras were both arrested on complaints of drug possession and were booked into jail.

The opossums, officials said, were uninjured and released back into the wild.

The incident remains under investigation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, and anyone with information is asked to call the Fontana Sheriff’s Station at 909-356-6767.
