Kamala Harris and Donald Trump clashed on politics and personality during their first debate on Tuesday, offering contrasting visions for the country ahead of November’s presidential election.
The forum gave voters a clearer picture of a race that has significantly shifted since June’s debate, which saw President Joe Biden stumble, forcing him to ultimately withdraw under pressure from his own party.
Harris, now the Democratic nominee, wasted no time challenging Trump, attacking his rhetoric and linking him to the conservative Project 2025 plan and Republican efforts to limit abortion rights. Trump attempted to tie Harris to Biden, particularly on her handling of illegal immigration, a responsibility Biden assigned to her.
