Bears QB Caleb Williams Struggles Heavily in First Half of NFL Debut

US

A new era of Chicago Bears football is underway, and so far, it is not off to a pretty start. The Bears are taking on the Tennessee Titans at home to open their season, and Bears quarterback and No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams is not having the start that he had envisioned.

At halftime, the Bears are trailing the Titans 17-3. The Bears’ offense, led by Williams, has been lackluster at best. Williams has only completed 8 of 14 passes for 53 yards.

Overall, the Bears have only 50 total yards, one turnover, and five first downs with 11:04 minutes of possession. The Titans have 179 total yards, zero turnovers, 12 first downs, two touchdowns, and a passing and rushing one in 18:56 minutes of possession.

Williams’s debut was highly automated, and so far, it has been far from what many expected it to be. The No. 1 overall pick showed some signs of brilliance in preseason, but we have yet to see any of that.

Fans on social media aren’t shy about letting Williams know how they feel about his first half performance.

Williams is a talented quarterback, but regardless of who you are, you are going to struggle in the first taste of NFL action. That is what is happening to Williams, and growing pains were expected to come along, especially in his rookie season.

The Beras selected the 22-year-old in April’s 2024 NFL draft after a spectacular college career with Oklahoma and USC. He spent one season at Oklahoma before he followed his college coach, Lincoln Riley, to USC and led them back to glory.

In Williams’ first season at USC, he won the Heisman trophy in 2022 after completing 33 passes for 4,537 yards and completed 66.6 percent of his passes with 42 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a passer efficiency rating of 168.5. The next season, Williams completed 266 passes for 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns, and five interceptions and completed 68.6 percent of his passes in 12 games as a junior.

The hope is that Williams can bring that spark to Chicago. While things don’t look bright at the moment, he is too talented to not lead the Bears to new heights. People will overreact, but it’s important to remember that he is a rookie and will have his moments of not looking so great.

The Bears will look to a miracle in the second half to come away with the victory.
