(KRON) — A person was attacked by dogs and mauled to death in Oakland, California police said. Oakland Police Department officers were alerted about a “canine attack” at noon on September 1, an OPD spokesperson said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim suffering from several dog bites, police said. The victim never made it to a hospital, and was pronounced deceased by paramedics at the scene.

The victim was a 53-year-old man, East Bay Times reported.

The vicious dogs’ owner, identified by prosecutors as Brendan Thomas Burke, appeared in court on Thursday. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office spokesperson said Burke is charged with felony failure to control an animal killing a human.

A judge allowed Burke to remain out of custody on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to return to Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland on September 12 for a plea hearing.
