Bruins training camp is on the horizon, and a deal is still yet to be done with star goaltender Jeremy Swayman.

Although both sides have spoken positively about their commitment to coming together in terms of Swayman’s extension, the sides are reportedly far apart, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.

Speaking on his podcast, “32 Thoughts,” Friedman noted that the 4-year, $6.2 million offer that was speculated to be the Bruins’ proposal “has not been disputed” to Friedman, who believes that was one offer on the table.

According to Friedman, Swayman is looking for a significantly higher number.

“I’ve also heard the McAvoy contract was the ask, which was [$9.5 million],” Friedman said. “So, it’s obvious there’s a huge discrepancy here.”

McAvoy’s contract was not only for big money, but it was also an eight-year deal. Swayman appears to be looking for that same long-term reassurance at a high average annual value, but Boston’s deals haven’t come close to meeting that range financially.

“I do believe at some point, there was the eight-year deal on the table, but it was in the sixes,” Friedman said. “So, I don’t think at any point here, anyone’s ever been close.”

Both Swayman and Boston remained optimistic that a deal would get done before training camp. But camp is fast approaching, starting on Sept. 15, and thus far positive updates on the contract talks are few and far between.

Friedman did hear that Swayman and Bruins president Cam Neely met one-on-one recently, although he doesn’t believe it changed anything on either side.

If Swayman is going to be Boston’s No. 1 goaltender for the long haul, it seems some serious work still needs to be done to make that happen.
