A Michigan newlywed couple is facing charges in the death of a groomsman struck by an SUV after a wedding fight.
Flint police were called to a crash involving a pedestrian last Friday, the department said in a Sept 4 release.
Terry Lewis Taylor Jr., 29, was found at the scene with “severe injuries,” and was rushed to Hurley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
“Further investigation revealed that earlier that day, [the victim] had attended a wedding as a groomsman,” police said. “After the wedding he was involved in an argument which led to him being intentionally struck by a large SUV that was traveling at a high rate of speed and driven by the groom.”
James Shirah, the 22-year-old groom who was driving the SUV, has been charged with second-degree murder. His wife Savahna Collier, 21, has been charged with a felony of accessory after the fact.
Genesee County prosecutor David Leyton told the Associated Press the wedding took place at a pizzeria and the dispute occurred later outside a home where the celebration had continued.
Leyton said the bride and groom left the scene and waited a day to go to police, further complicating the investigation.
“I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” Leyton told the AP. “I’ve seen people running over other people but not so soon after a wedding.”
Shirah is being held without bail. Collier posted $4,000 bond.
