Two CPD officers arrested, charged with criminal damage to property

CHICAGO — Two police officers on Thursday were arrested, relieved of their police powers and charged with criminal damage to property.

Charged with one count was Deputy Chief Roberto Nieves, 53. Officer Jacob Gies, 26, was charged with two counts.

Both surrendered for arrest at the 1st District Police Station in connection with an incident that occurred on June 7, 2024, the department confirmed to WGN.

Following his arrest, Nieves was returned to his career service rank of captain. Nieves has been with the department for more than 25 years, previously serving as commander of the Gang Investigation Division. He also served as commander of the 24th District, which serves the city’s Rogers Park neighborhood, and as executive officer of the 12th District on the Near West side.
