OAKLAND — An Oakland man has been charged with failing to secure three dogs who got loose and killed his friend on Sunday, court records show.

Brendan Burke, 57, was charged with a single felony count of failing to secure animals resulting in death. He is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and his bail amount is not listed.

The victim was a 53-year-old man who was friends with Burke, authorities said. His name has been withheld pending family notification.

Burke was running an errand at the store when the dogs got loose from his property and killed the victim, who attempted to hide under a vehicle, authorities said. The dogs, all mastiff breeds, were turned over to animal control.

The incident occurred Sunday on the 1600 block of 36th Avenue.
