Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story is on the road to recovery after suffering a shoulder injury in early April that was expected to take him out for the rest of the season.

The 31-year-old dislocated his left shoulder in the fourth inning of a game against the Angels on April 5, in which he dived to grab the ball and landed on the grass with all of his body weight on his left side. He subsequently underwent surgery.

Story started his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, when he went 2 for 4 with a double, then played five innings on Monday. The two-time All-Star is also scheduled to play on Wednesday and Thursday.

“I didn’t think this was a possibility when we first got the news with the injury,” he told the Boston Globe. “Today was a big step and I was trying to have fun with it.”

With a record of 70-69, the Red Sox will conclude their three-game series against the Mets on Wednesday night. Play starts at Citi Field at 7:10 p.m.
