South Bay shooting leaves 1 dead; person of interest in custody

A person of interest is in custody following the fatal shooting of a man in the parking lot of a Hawthorne apartment building Tuesday night.

Police received multiple 911 calls reporting the incident in the 13900 block of Chadron Avenue.

Officers arrived shortly before 9 p.m. and found a 24-year-old man down in the parking lot with at least one gunshot wound.

The victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

After talking to witnesses, police went to a unit on the building’s third floor and took the possible suspect into custody.

The motive for the shooting and any potential relationship between the person of interest and the victim was unknown.

Authorities are seeking additional witnesses.
