Stefon Diggs Says Last Year With Bills Was ‘Worst Mental Space’ of NFL Career

US

Stefon Diggs heads into the 2024 season with a fresh start on a revitalized, young Houston Texans team. Following a tumultuous conclusion to his four seasons in Buffalo, the Bills traded Diggs to the Texans in April.

Throughout his final year in Buffalo, there were regular murmurs and discussions about tension between Diggs and quarterback Josh Allen, as well as the Bills organization. After receiving for 100 yards or more in the first five of six games of the season, Diggs’ production dipped. He did not record 100 yards again, and only scored two more touchdowns the rest of the season.

Diggs credits that drop in production in part due to the Bills switching offensive coordinators, firing Ken Dorsey and promoting Joe Brady to OC.

“The games looked a lot different,” Diggs told GQ’s Clay Skipper. “You can blame me. I don’t mind blaming me. I got big-ass shoulders. But pay attention, pay real close attention. Watch the game. Of course there’s plenty of plays I want back. But there’s a lot of plays that didn’t go my way. I need a lot of things to go right to get the ball.”

Diggs added, “You can’t roll out of bed and get 800 yards in the first eight games. Your best receiver’s doing that. You tell me about the last 10. What changed? Were there changes going on? I just pay attention to what really happened and not what people try to act like happened. Like, for the last 10 games, I forgot how to f—ing play football?”

As a result, Diggs called last season the ‘worst mental space’ he has been in throughout his NFL career.

“Last year, I was in the worst mental space I’ve been in since I’ve been in the league,” Diggs said. “If I’m not in a good space, obviously that’s not the best for me. So that’s when things had to start shaking out.”

Diggs was not surprised that he ended up getting traded. He instead states that the Bills, and the Minnesota Vikings before, did not want to trade him.

“None of those teams wanted to get rid of me,” Diggs said.”Things had to shake because I kind of wanted them to shake.”

Diggs figures to emerge as a top target for the Texans’ offense and second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud, coming off a year in which they advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Bills are moving on with a more open playing field at receiver. With Diggs gone, there is no true No. 1 wideout, which Allen is embracing heading into the season opener.
