A 15-year-old high school freshman was killed Tuesday morning when she was struck by a school bus in Kentucky.

The incident happened in Winchester, a suburb southwest of Lexington, around 6:45 a.m.

The victim was later identified as George Rogers Clark High School student McKenna Letcher.

“The Clark County Public Schools family is heartbroken today,” said superintendent Dustin Howard, adding that grief counselors and other mental health personnel would be available for students and staff throughout the district.

The Clark County coroner said the girl was crossing an intersection when she was hit by the bus.

“My heart aches for the family and friends of this precious child lost in this tragedy,” Kentucky governor Andy Beshear said in a Facebook post. “Please join Britainy and me in lifting up the Clark County community in prayers of peace and comfort.”

It’s unclear if any charges will be filed. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
