Two injured in highway shooting on Saturday afternoon – The Mercury News

OAKLAND — Two people were shot and injured on eastbound I-580 on Saturday afternoon, prompting the highway to be shut down for over six hours, officials said.

California Highway Patrol’s Oakland office was alerted to the shooting on eastbound I-580 near Seminary Avenue around 2:11 p.m. on Saturday, according to a news release from the CHP. One of the victims called 911 as the officers were enroute to the scene and said that he and a female passenger had been struck by gunfire. He proceeded to drive himself and the female passenger to a San Leandro hospital.

The man sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the abdomen, while the female passenger had a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head and was transported to a local trauma center.

All lanes of eastbound I-580 were closed at Seminary Avenue from 3:11 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. while the CHP investigated. Officers have not determined a motive and are still trying to identify possible suspects.
