BEACH PARK, Ill. — Lake County Sheriff’s K9 Danno apprehended a domestic battery offender who was refusing surrender in Beach Park on Saturday evening.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office says at approximately 6:45 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a home in the 38700 block of North Sheridan Road for a domestic battery in progress. The 911 caller informed dispatch that her boyfriend hit and choked her.

The Sheriff’s Office said the victim was able to exit the home, and deputies established a perimeter around it.

Shortly after establishing the perimeter, the Sheriff’s Office says the suspect, 26-year-old Ruben Ruiz of Beach Park, tried to escape out of a window but retreated when he saw deputies. Deputies, along with K9 Danno, entered the home to arrest Ruiz.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Ruiz hid under and bed and refused to follow instructions from deputies. He was warned that K9 Danno would be released if he did not surrender.

The Sheriff’s Office says Ruiz continued his refusal to surrender, so K9 Danno was released. K9 Danno bit Ruiz’s arm, then he surrendered.

Ruiz was evaluated by paramedics for the dog bite and transported to the Lake County Jail, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He was charged by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office with two counts of domestic battery and obstructing a peace officer.
