Plainfield woman dies after being shot in Whitewater, Wisconsin

WHITEWATER, Wi. – A 21-year-old Plainfield, Illinois, woman has died after being shot at an apartment in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Whitewater police said at 11:54 p.m. Friday, officers were sent to an apartment in the 100 block of West Whitewater Street to investigate reports of a shooting. When officers arrived at the apartment, they found a 21-year-old woman who had been shot multiple times. She was pronounced dead at the scene and was identified as Kara Welsh, a student at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater who was majoring in business management and was also a member of the school’s gymnastics team.

Officers also found a 23-year-old man inside the apartment who reportedly knew Welsh. While investigating, officers determined Welsh and the 23-year-old man got into an argument before the shooting.

The 23-year-old man has since been arrested and is being held in the Walworth County Jail. He has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by the use of a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct while armed.

His identity has not been released.

School officials said counseling services will be made available to UW-Whitewater students, faculty and staff. Chancellor Corey King also said the UW-Whitewater flag will fly at half-staff Tuesday. His full statement can be found here.
