2 in custody after carjacking victims in South Chicago give chase

Two people were arrested Friday night after a 41-year-old woman was grazed by gunfire after she and a male victim followed carjackers who took the male victim’s vehicle in the South Chicago neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Shortly before 8:15 p.m., the victim was on the street next to his vehicle in the 8100 block of South Escanaba Avenue, when two armed suspects demanded his vehicle and fled the scene, police said.

The carjacking victim, along with a 41-year-old woman, followed the carjackers in another vehicle. The suspects then opened fire at both victims, striking the woman in the right shoulder, police said. The woman was taken in good condition to UChicago Medicine.

The stolen vehicle was recovered by responding officers in the 7900 block of South Escanaba Avenue, and two people were arrested. A weapon also was recovered at the scene.

Charges were pending.
