This new baby name trend is very mindful, very … interesting?

US

A woman who recently gave birth revealed her baby girl’s name in a recent TikTok video, and the conscious is that social media trends may have strayed too far into the real world.

In a video posted to TikTok last week, user shatwanesha shared her new baby’s name: Demure. No, she didn’t name the child after KTLA tech reporter Rich DeMuro, but rather a trend that took social media by storm this summer.

“Meet DeMure,” the TikTok caption reads. “See how she not crying ! Very sweet, very cutesy, very demure.”

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines demure as “modest, reserved, or serious.” It’s been used on social media to correlate to mindfulness and a relaxing attitude.

The demure trend took off after a video from TikTok user joolieannie on Aug. 2. In the video, which now has more than 50 million views, she explains how to be “demure and mindful” at work.

While being demure is about having grace and “not doing too much,” the TikTok commenters took issue with using the trendy phrase to name a child.

“Oh y’all are INFLUENCED,” said TikTok user Selena.

“well that’s not very demure,” said user akelahhhhh.

Speaking about the baby name fiasco on Saturday’s edtiion of the KTLA Weekend Morning News, KTLA 5’s Andy Riesmeyer hit the nail on the head.

“This is like if you named your kid last year Girl Dinner,” he said. “‘Here’s my son, Blue Dress or Gold Dress … If you’re naming your kid based on an internet trend then that’s the least of your kid’s problems.”

Kacey Montoya came to a compromise as the desk argued over the name’s validity, saying it would make a good name for a cat.
