MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A United Airlines flight from Cancún, Mexico, en route to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was diverted to Memphis on Wednesday after multiple passengers were injured in flight.

United Airlines said Flight 1196 experienced a brief period of severe turbulence while the seatbelt sign was on.

Paramedics met the aircraft at the gate, and one passenger was taken to the hospital. The Memphis Fire Department said six other passengers were treated and released.

“We’re grateful to our crew for their efforts to ensure the safety of our employees and customers, and we expect the flight to depart for Chicago soon,” said a United Airlines spokesperson.
