CHICAGO — Two people were rescued by firefighters from the fourth floor of a multi-unit South Side apartment building that caught fire early Thursday morning.
Chicago Fire Department officials said around 5:45 a.m. that the fire had been extinguished in the building, located in the 7800 block of South Shore Drive, and that nobody had been transported to the hospital.
Residents told WGN the fire started just before 4:30 a.m. Thursday, and CFD officials confirmed that it started on the fourth floor of the building. Residents said they had no time to grab anything before exiting the building, as they waited outside early Thursday morning to hear word on the condition of their units.
However, everybody made it out safely.
“It’s heart-wrenching, and I’m hoping that they will be OK and that no others will be affected,” apartment resident Sabrina Washington said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
