Oak Lawn road rage, Mokena elder abuse

The following items were taken from police and court reports and news releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

Bridgeview

BURGLARY: A residential surveillance system in the 9300 block of Thomas Avenue enabled the homeowner’s son to witness an Aug. 14 break-in attempt, ask a neighbor to intervene and notify police, while providing evidence, police said. Ahmad Mohammed Saleh, 35, 9200 block of Beloit Avenue, Bridgeview, was arrested and subsequently charged with attempted residential burglary, police said.

BATTERY: Mohammed Chreide, 40, Oak Lawn, was arrested Aug. 24 and accused of battery and violating an order of protection in the 8800 block of Harlem Avenue, police said.

Burbank

SEX OFFENDER: Thomas B. Simpson, 51, homeless, was arrested Aug. 12 and subsequently charged with felony failing to report a change in employment within the required three days, police said. Simpson failed to list his job at a business in the 5400 block of 79th Street when registering as a sex offender with Chicago police Aug. 7, police said. Simpson was convicted in Vermillion County of committing aggravated criminal sex abuse when he was 18 and the victim was 15, according to the Illinois State Police sex-offender registry online.

PHONE ROBBERY: Ashraf M. Atwan, 27, 7800 block of Lorel Avenue, Burbank, was arrested and accused of robbery Aug. 13 after forcibly taking two cellphones from another person in that block, police said.

Evergreen Park

ROBBERY ATTEMPT: A woman was pushed to the ground but held onto her purse during an Aug. 8 attempted robbery in the parking lot of a buyer’s club in the 9400 block of Western Avenue, police said. Officers identified an involved car, which turned out to have been stolen out of Chicago.

IDENTITY THEFT: Shawn Black, 55, Chicago, was arrested and accused of identity theft Aug. 12 after attempting to withdraw $5,000 from a customer’s account at Old National Bank, 2400 95th St., while providing a fake driver’s license identifying him as the customer, police said.

BATTERY: Kimi S. Rance, 44, Chicago, was arrested and accused of battery Aug. 23 after pushing an employee during an argument in the parking lot outside Walmart, 2500 95th St., police said.

Mokena

ELDER ABUSE: A 22-year-old Mokena man is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing Friday, charged with three counts of battery to a person 60 or older. Andrew J. Stecko, 19400 block of 116th Street, was arrested Aug. 15 and remained incarcerated on order of a Will County judge, according to court records online.

Oak Lawn

ILLEGAL TWERKING: A Chicago woman was arrested and accused of indecent exposure Aug. 10 after pulling down her pants to expose herself while “twerking” at an officer in the 8700 block of Cicero Avenue, police said. Charnell R. Newell, 26, who also yelled curses and racial epithets at an officer while blocking his squad from leaving, was additionally accused of resisting arrest after attempting to run away, police said.

ILLEGAL GUN: Jeanette Ann Hughes, 50, Westchester, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after officers recovered a loaded 9 mm handgun and an extra loaded magazine from her vehicle during an Aug. 16 traffic stop at 95th Street and 54th Avenue and determined she lacked state gun permits, police said.

ROAD RAGE: A couple told police Aug. 17 that a man drove behind their car, repeatedly changing lanes when they did and then pulled up next their vehicle, yelled at them and pointed a handgun at them before driving off, police said. Mounted surveillance cameras identified their vehicle, but not the other vehicle, police said.

STREET SHOOTING: The driver of a car and his passenger escaped injury from at least five bullets shot at 1:20 a.m. Aug. 18 by the driver of the car in front of them in Kenton Avenue near 93rd Street, police said. The reporting driver said he followed the other vehicle around the block because he suspected it was involved in the theft of a gun from his vehicle Aug. 12. Officers estimated damage to his car at $1,000, police said.

UNLAWFUL RESTRAINT: Baraa Qaisi, 24, of 94th Street, Oak Lawn, was arrested and accused of aggravated unlawful restraint Aug. 19 after holding a family member and another person inside the home at gunpoint for five hours, police said. The family member estranged from the family and other person had been invited to the home for a reconciliation, police said.

HOSPITAL BATTERY: Jessica M. Chize, 36, undisclosed block of Ridgeland Avenue, Chicago Ridge, was arrested Aug. 20 at Advocate Christ Medical Center and accused of battery after punching an emergency room staff member, pulling the staffer onto the bed and choking the staffer, police said.

Orland Park

RETAIL THEFT: A Schaumburg woman wanted in California on charges of organized retail theft and two counts of grand theft was arrested Aug. 9 after she stole cosmetics collectively selling for $2,617.89 from Jewel-Osco, 9350 159th St., police said. Dorinta Velcu, 28, was charged with felony theft and served with the Contra Costa County arrest warrant, police said.

Posen

YOUTH ARRESTED: Officers apprehended a youth while responding to a Aug. 21-22 report of shots fired, police said. The youth, who is unnamed because of age, was arrested after officers recovered the handgun he dropped while being chased, police said. The youth was among a group that fled on bicycles, yelling gang slogans, after officers disrupted their attempt to steal the street sign at 150th Street and Sacramento Avenue, police said. Officers later determined the four or five shots had been fired into the air; no one was injured and no homes hit, police said.
