Kamala Harris and Tim Walz agree to CNN interview

More than a month after becoming the Democratic party’s nominee for president, Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, will sit for their first joint interview with a news agency.

CNN announced Tuesday it will air a discussion between Harris, Walz and politics correspondent Dana Bash on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET. The interview takes place in Georgia, which will likely be a pivotal state in deciding the 47th president in November.

Harris has raised eyebrows by avoiding questions since President Biden announced on July 21 he would not seek reelection and gave his vice president his blessing to carry the party forward.

Harris announced Walz as her vice presidential pick on Aug. 6. He officially accepted that nomination at the Democratic National Convention last Wednesday.

The pair immediately hosted rallies nationwide drawing huge and enthusiastic crowds. Most polls show the Democratic presidential ticket has pulled slightly ahead of the Republican tandem of Donald Trump and JD Vance.

Trump seemed poised to win back the presidency until Harris entered the race. He’s been highly critical of his opponents’ avoidance of interviews and press conferences, which Trump partially blames on Harris’ having a “low IQ” in his opinion.

Harris’ decision to hold her first interview with CNN — a network some cable news viewers believe to have a liberal bias — is unlikely to quiet Trump’s criticisms. He frequently calls CNN “Fake News.”

Trump and Harris are scheduled to debate each other Sept. 10 on ABC. Trump has pushed for a debate on Fox News, where he enjoys strong support.
