SAN JOSE – A 47-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy were killed Monday afternoon when a wrong-way driver crashed into their car on Highway 85 in San Jose, according to authorities.
The fatal collision happened around 3:40 p.m. in northbound lanes of the freeway just south of Santa Teresa Boulevard, California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee said.
Prior to the crash, the CHP received reports about a 2024 Toyota Tacoma traveling in the wrong direction. Lee said the driver – identified as a 39-year-old Orlando man – crashed head-on into a 2021 Tesla Model Y before officers could intercept him.
The occupants of the Tesla – a woman and boy from San Jose – were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota, meanwhile, was taken to an area hospital with major injuries.
A video posted to Reddit showed the Toyota traveling southbound on northbound 85 near the Almaden Expressway exit.
It was not immediately known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, Lee said.
Northbound lanes of 85 were closed for an investigation and traffic was diverted onto Highway 87.
