Five hospitalized with electrical shocks while wading in family's backyard pool

LOGANSPORT, Ind. — Two adults and three children were hospitalized Sunday after being injured by electric shocks as they waded in a family pool at a northern Indiana home, officials said.

Officers called to the home on High Street in the community of Logansport on Sunday afternoon found five people injured from shocks. Two of the people were unresponsive.

“According to the report, they felt a vibration in the water, and the dad yelled to shut the sump pump off,” said Logansport police Chief Travis Yike.

Authorities traced the electric shock to a wire on a pump that was pinched near the pool’s ladder. The pinching broke a protective cover, exposing the wire to the elements and the pool’s water.

The five who were hurt were taken to a local hospital in serious but stable condition. Three of the swimmers, including two of the juveniles, were transferred to different medical facilities for additional treatment. Police believe the individuals who were shocked were two parents, their kids, and one of their kids’ friends.

“It’s an unfortunate accident but fortunately everyone is doing OK,” Yike said, adding that one of the children, a lifeguard in the community, likely saved his family members’ lives.

“I do want to give accolades to that young man that was in the pool when this happened,” Yike said. “And (he) was also injured but took it upon himself once the power was shut off to jump out and recognize what was going on and save his dad and his sister and his sister’s friends lives. If it wasn’t for the heroic acts of a 16-year-old juvenile that was involved in this, it may have turned out a lot different.”

At last check Monday, one of the juveniles was still in the hospital, but everyone is expected to survive.

Police said there were no signs of any criminal activity.
