Colby Rubin announces Sam Rubin Memorial Campership

The Boy Scouts of America meant a great deal to our Sam Rubin. He and his son Colby were active in the organization and bonded over numerous camping trips and hikes.

Sam took pride in Colby’s journey to being an Eagle Scout and was a dedicated Board Member of the Western Los Angeles County Council, Boy Scouts of America.

To honor Sam’s legacy, the Western Los Angeles County Council of the Boy Scouts of America has created the Sam Rubin Campership.

All of the proceeds raised will go towards lower-income families to send their scouts to Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina Island at no cost.

“Our most close bonds were when we were scouting together,” Colby told KTLA 5’s Dayna Devon. “We wanted to be able to give other people the opportunity to have the close connection we got to have through scouting.”

Colby said that Sam was drawn to Emerald Bay because he “saw young people learning and growing.”

“He wanted more kids to have access to this,” he continued. “Me and my dad spent an enormous amount of quality time together and I really attribute that to scouting.”

Unique to Emerald Bay is the Outdoor Academy (EBOA), which is a youth science education program with the mission of inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards through overnight science programs built upon the values and methods of Scouting. It runs in the spring and the fall.

It costs about $1,000 to send a child to the camp for a week.

“We have a special goal to raise $50,000. That would send 50 campers to this camp in Sam’s name next year,” Wendy Burch explained. “It’s easy to do, your donation goes directly to the Boy Scouts of America.”
