Family of Senn High School student killed by gun violence celebrates his birthday

CHICAGO – The family of a Senn High School student killed by gun violence in January celebrated his birthday and honored his life Saturday.

More than anything, the family of Daveon Gibson would love to give him a hug and shower him with gifts, but they instead invited people to Forest Park to celebrate his short, but impactful life.

While a crowd came out to the Miller Meadow Forest Preserve to celebrate Daveon’s birthday, the party didn’t feel quite right without the guest of honor.

“It’s been a rough seven months,” said Sherry Wesley, Daveon’s grandmother.

Wesley planned Saturday’s party of Daveon, her oldest grandson, who loved his family, dancing, and aspired to become a veterinarian.

On Saturday, party attendees wore jerseys with Daveon’s name and the phrase “Forever 16” in order to keep his memory alive.

“Daveon would have been 17 years old and this is how we have to celebrate his birthday, having a picnic in his honor because he’s not here,” Wesley said.

On Wednesday, Jan. 31, Daveon was leaving Senn High School when he was shot. He later died from his injuries. Two other boys were also shot, but survived, and two teens have since been charged in Daveon’s murder.

Devon Gibson, Daveon’s father, said his son was full of life and was always looking forward to trying something new.

“He was just ready to drive. He was about to start driving, so excited about that,” Devon said.

More than anything, Daveon’s friends and family wish he was here to celebrate, but since he’s no longer here, they hope Saturday’s party ignites peace and honor’s his legacy.

“He was just full of love, so we’re going to continue to reciprocate that,” Devon said.

Chicago Public Schools start back up on Monday. Wesley said one of the hardest things is knowing she won’t be able to send him off to class to begin what would have been his junior year.
