Three wow moments, three ugly moments at Castle Pines Golf Club

US

CASTLE ROCK — With Day 2 of the 2024 BMW Championship in the books, here’s a look at a few of the top wow moments and a few of the uglier moments from Castle Pines Golf Club.

The Wow Moments

• Local favorite Wyndham Clark, who sits tied for 10th at 4-under par, nearly aced the iconic par-3 16th hole with a beautiful 228-yard iron that landed and stuck, 11 inches from the pin. The Valor Christian alum tapped it in for one of his five birdies on the day.

• Patrick Cantlay (5-under) hit his first shot on the par-3 seventh 171 yards to the right bunker. He had an uphill lie close to the edge of the bunker. But Cantlay responded by hitting a masterful sand wedge. From 30 feet out, the ball took two short skips and rolled in.

•  Xander Schauffele, No. 2 in the FedExCup rankings, didn’t have the best day by carding 1-over. But he produced a highlight via a 47-foot birdie putt on the 11th hole. The putt was downhill, but Schauffele’s stroke was perfectly placed and directly on line.

The Ugly Moments

• Rory McIlroy’s frustration simmered over during a round that left him tied for 15th at 3-under. After a three-putt for bogey on the 16th in which he missed a 17-inch par putt, his drive on the 17th went 294 yards into the rough. McIlroy tossed his driver into the pond, then had to fish it out.

• The No. 1 handicap par-4 10th hole ate Max Homa up. Homa hit his first drive out of bounds on the right, and his second drive out of bounds on the left. He was hitting five by the time he got a drive in play en route to a quadruple bogey. Homa is 47th at 5-over.

• Sepp Straka (tied for 23rd at 2-under) bungled a birdie chance on the par-5 eighth with poor shots around/on the green. His punch from 60 feet out rolled 20 feet past the pin and off the green. Then, the Austrian chipped on and two-putted for a bogey.
