An Ann Arbor animal shelter is filled with chirping after taking in dozens of birds this week.

The Humane Society of Huron Valley is now caring for 30 abandoned birds that were left outside the shelter Monday morning, the shelter said. This includes 26 parakeets packed into a cardboard cat carrier and four cockatiels in a cage.

The birds deserved care and attention, said CEO Tanya Hilgendorf.

“We understand that sometimes people feel they have no other option, but abandoning animals is never the right answer,” Hilgendorf said.

Staff are now providing the birds medical care and nutrition, the shelter said. The birds are among 51 birds surrendered or abandoned this week, a record high.

“These birds were left in a vulnerable position, but we’re grateful the community supports us in supporting them—providing the resources by volunteering, adopting and donating, to ensure we can care for them,” Hilgendorf said.
