Authorities in Connecticut are investigating an apparent murder-suicide they said involved a husband and wife.

The couple was identified on Thursday as 62-year-old Naresh Kumar and his wife, Upma Sharma, the Hartford Courant reported. They’d been married and living together in East Hartford for several years, said East Hartford Police Department spokesperson Marc Caruso.

Authorities were called Wednesday night to their home on 140 Hilltop Farms Lane to investigate reports of gunfire. When officers arrived at the residence around 10:30 p.m., they found the pair each suffering gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts to provide life-saving measures, both Kumar and Sharma were pronounced dead one the scene, Caruso said.

“A firearm was recovered,” he added, noting that the handgun was not far from the bodies and legally registered to Kumar.

A third person in the home at the time was physically unharmed.

Investigators have since uncovered evidence suggesting a fight occurred between the victims just prior to the deadly violence, Caruso said. At this time, they suspect Kumar shot and killed Sharma before turning the gun on himself, but police declined to provide further details.

Neighbor Liana Senel told WFSB she heard a “loud screech” shortly before authorities responded to the Hilltop Farms Lane cul-de-sac. They told everyone to go inside and lock their doors, she recalled.

“I was confused and a little scared because you don’t know what’s going on,” she said.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
