Residents in a Joliet subdivision have been urged to “shelter in place” as police search for a man “possibly armed with a handgun.”

The Joliet Police Department said in an urgent alert to residents at 11:30 a.m. Thursday that police are investigating an “active incident” in the 500 block of Silver Falls Street. Anyone who lives nearby was asked to stay inside.

“This area includes the vicinity of the College Park subdivision near Houbolt Road in Joliet,” police said. “Troy Heritage Trail school is nearby, and we currently have notified the school and have an officer present at the school.”

As of 1 p.m. Thursday, police told NBC Chicago no one was in custody.

The suspect is 5-foot-7, weighing 300 pounds with dreadlocks and all-dark clothing, police said.

“Anyone observing this suspect should not approach and call 911 immediately,” police told residents in a statement posted to social media. “This is a developing situation and further details will be provided when they become available.”
