Ukrainian forces have targeted some of Russia’s most remote airbases in mass drone strikes over the past two days, including the Marynivka military airfield in the southwestern Volgograd region overnight on Wednesday.
Hours after a Ukrainian drone attack targeted the Olenya air base in Russia’s Murmansk region—located some 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) from the Ukraine border—multiple explosions were reported at the Marynivka, an air base of the Russian Aerospace Forces, in the village of Oktyabrsky in the Kalachevsky district.
Regional governor Andrei Bocharov confirmed an attack, saying a fire broke out at a Russian defense ministry facility. “Most of the drones were destroyed…there are no casualties,” he said on Telegram.
Videos posted on social media show a massive fireball and plumes of black smoke over the Marynivka airbase, which is known to host Russian fighter jets.
