The city of Boston will honor R&B band New Edition with a weekend of events culminating in a concert on City Hall Plaza on Sept. 7, the Mayor’s office announced in a statement on Tuesday.

“Being from the city of champions is an honor and we are truly appreciative of the foundation that was laid for us in Boston,” Ronnie DeVoe of New Edition said in the statement. “Continuing to make sure that we are positive role models for Boston’s new generations is what life is all about. Lastly, and most importantly, being able to give back to our community by helping others is how we turn our gifts and talents into purpose!”

The events honoring New Edition

On Sept. 6, Mayor Michelle Wu and band members will unveil a mural of the band designed and painted by Roxbury-based artist Lee “Square” Beard, the statement said. The mural will be at the corner of Ambrose and Albany Streets in Roxbury, according to the Mayor’s office.

That isn’t the only upgrade coming to Ambrose Street. The statement said Wu will unofficially rename the street “New Edition Way” and declare Sept. 9 as “New Edition Day.”

“It is such an honor to be able to celebrate one of the most iconic groups to ever come out of the city of Boston,” said John Borders IV, Director of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment for the City of Boston.

In addition, the band and the city will host a senior breakfast and backpack giveaway, the statement said. This event will be at 10 a.m. at the Orchard Garden Boys & Girls Club of Boston at 2 Dearborn St. The Boys & Girls Club is the site of New Edition’s first practice spaces, the statement said.

New Edition concert planned for City Hall Plaza

The weekend will end Sept. 7 with a concert on City Hall Plaza, the statment said. The concert, called HOMEMADE, will feature 20 local artists and a guest performance from New Edition, the Mayor’s office said. It will start at 3 p.m.

“Music brings communities together,” Wu said in the statement. “I am thrilled to honor New Edition and celebrate local talent with HOMEMADE. I look forward to recognizing these legendary Boston artists for their contributions to our community’s arts and culture.”

The concert is free and open to the public, but the city encourages attendees to register. According to the statement, food trucks and water will be available.
