Changes coming to classic Disneyland ride

US

Disneyland is planning to make changes to its classic Peter Pan’s Flight attraction following the removal of insensitive racial stereotypes and caricatures of indigenous people from the version at Walt Disney World in Florida.

In Florida, Walt Disney Imagineers installed a new scene complete with audio audiometric figures of Tiger Lily and her great-grandmother.

Disneyland officials told KTLA that similar changes are expected for its version of the attraction. However, specific details on what those changes are or when those changes will occur were not revealed.

Imagineers have a longstanding history of making updates and enhancements to attractions and experiences, so they remain fresh and relevant. We consider ourselves constant learners and as we identify ways that can make our attractions and experiences more authentic and relatable, and our stories connect more deeply to our guests, we make thoughtful changes, Disneyland officials said in a statement to KTLA.

Imagineers also updated the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction in 2018 to remove the scene of tied-up women being presumably auctioned off to pirates, The San Bernardino Sun reported. The scene now shows a female pirate overseeing an auction.

Disneyland is also working to reimagine Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

In recent years, Splash Mountain has drawn heat since it featured characters and music from the 1946 animated feature “Song of the South,” a movie criticized for its stereotypes of Black men and its romanticized view of the post-Civil War South.

The ride’s new storyline focuses on Princess Tiana, Disney’s first Black princess, and the events that took place after the 2009 animated hit “Princess and the Frog.”

Riders will follow Tiana and Louis as they search for a missing ingredient ahead of a one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras celebration she will be hosting. As the ride concludes, guests will discover they are the missing ingredient, or “special spice,” Tiana was looking for.

Peter Pan’s Flight, which takes guests on a journey to Neverland, is an opening day attraction at Disneyland.
