OAKLAND — Authorities have released the name of the suspect arrested in a shooting earlier this month in Oakland where a father of two was wounded while sleeping in his home.

The suspect — identified as 20-year-old Oakland resident Damon Roberts — was taken into custody Monday in Richmond, the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department said in a news release.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged Roberts with multiple felonies, including unlawful firearm activity and possession of a machine gun. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.

The shooting happened Aug. 1 in a housing project in the1900 block of East 19th Street in East Oakland, not far from San Antonio Park, according to police.

The victim, who family and authorities identified as 33-year-old Run Hua Kuang, survived but remains hospitalized. He is on life support in the Intensive Care Unit fighting for his life, according to sister Jasmine Kuang.

He had just gotten home from his job as a delivery truck driver and was taking a nap when a bullet penetrated the wall of his apartment, ripped through the headboard and struck him in the head, said sister Jasmine.

Kuang was taken to a hospital where he endured a seven-hour surgery,

Jasmine said her brother immigrated to the U.S .from Taishan, China in 2005 “searching for the American Dream for his family.”  He is the sole provider for his wife, baby and three-year-old daughter. Because he is the only member of the family who can speak English, he took sole care of the responsibilities and communication for the household.

Hua is the sole provider for his wife of 7 years and their 7-month old and 3-year old daughters along with his parents. They live in a housing project in East Oakland. His life was built upon being disciplined and devoted as a husband, father, and son.

A GoFundMe page for Kuang can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-huas-fight-for-life-after-tragic-shooting.

The investigation is ongoing and the Oakland Housing Authority urges anyone with knowledge of the incident to call the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department at (510) 535-3100 or the Anonymous Tip Line at (510) 535-3155.
