4 separate car crashes leave 2 dead and 2 in critical condition, police say

Two men have died and two are in critical condition after four separate car crashes on the North and West Sides on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The driver remained at the scene in only one of the collisions. Two of the collisions also involved gun violence.

A man, 67, was struck and killed by a black pickup truck while walking in North Rogers Park Saturday night, according to Chicago police.

The pickup truck, which was headed eastbound during the collision, fled the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m.

The hit-and-run victim sustained severe body trauma and was transported to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said citations will be issued and Major Accident Detectives are investigating.

Separately, another man, 33, was killed while walking in the Dunning neighborhood shortly before midnight, said police.

After entering the street from between two parked vehicles, the pedestrian was struck by a woman driving a black SUV on the 3300 block of North Harlem Avenue. He sustained head and body trauma and was treated by the Chicago Fire Department on the scene before being taken to Luther General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver remained on the scene and citations were issued. Major Accident Detectives are also investigating this fatal collision.

Then, early Sunday morning, police said a 21-year-old man was shot and critically injured following a car crash near the United Center, where preparation is underway for the Democratic National Convention tomorrow.

Just after 1 a.m. on the 500 block of North Damen Avenue, the man, who was driving a white truck, collided with a black truck.

Someone from the black truck proceeded to fire shots, striking the white truck’s driver, who sustained gunshot wounds to the head, shoulder and cheek. He was treated by the fire department officials on-scene before being transported to John H. Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

The black truck fled westbound and no one is in custody. Area Three Detectives are investigating.

Four hours later in Lakeview early Sunday morning, police found a 40-year-old man unresponsive after he struck two parked vehicles.

He sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body, according to police, and was taken to Illinois Masonic in critical condition.

Area Three Detectives are also investigating this crash and shooting that occurred on the 3800 block of North Marshfield Avenue.
