CHICAGO — A fatal shooting involving Chicago police officers early Sunday morning on the city’s Lower West Side is under investigation.
According to the Chicago Police Department, officers assigned to the Robbery Task Force heard multiple shots fired in the 1800 block of South Blue Island Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday. Police say the officers encountered armed offenders, upon which both officers fired their weapons and struck a male offender.
According to police, responding officers began rendering aid to the offender who was shot. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say a firearm was recovered at the scene in a slide-lock position.
According to police, a male and female victim were then found inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds in the vicinity of where officers first heard shots being fired. Both victims were taken to area hospitals and initially reported in critical condition, police say.
According to police, further investigation showed that the offender who was shot and killed by police was one of those who fired shots in the direction of the vehicle, striking both victims.
Police say the specifics of the incident, including a full use-of-force investigation, are under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), with the full cooperation of CPD.
According to CPD, the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duty for a minimum of 30 days.
