Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Attempted Behind-the-Back Pass to Spite Travis Kelce

US

Without a doubt, the Kansas City Chiefs are the most dominant team in the National Football League.

Going into the 2024 NFL season, the Chiefs are one of nine teams to win back-to-back Super Bowls. Even more impressive, Kansas City has made four Super Bowl appearances in five years, winning three of them.

Needless to say, the Chiefs are the team to beat this season.

One of the reasons the team is so successful is because of the relationship between quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce.

Since Mahomes has come on as quarterback, Kelce has excelled, tallying 7,428 yards and 52 touchdowns, and that’s not even including the playoffs.

Mahomes and Kelce currently hold the record for most touchdowns in the postseason with 16, surpassing Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski.

That being said, it’s not always perfect in paradise. But even when the duo are mad at each other, it seems they can’t help but be the highlight of a game.

In an interview shared on the Chiefs’ Instagram page, Mahomes revealed that an incredible behind-the-back pass to Kelce in their preseason game against the Detroit Lions was executed out of spite.

“Long story short, Travis didn’t run the route he was supposed to run,” Mahomes said. “And then it was a kind of a behind-the-back pass, kinda ’cause I was mad.”

“He was supposed to run the flat route, I don’t know if you can hear me on the broadcast, but I’m yelling at him. And then he doesn’t run it. So, out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass. But now, it’s gonna be a highlight.”

While the interviewer was astonished that it was improvised, Mahomes reiterated the importance of adapting to the game.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to say to everybody,” Mahomes said. “It can’t be planned.”

Despite this incredible play, the Chiefs came up just short, losing 24-23 against an up-and-coming Lions team. Still, this is the preseason, so it may not be worth determining an entire season based on this game.

As football fans have seen time and time again, both players are able to make big plays when it matters most. If their chemistry continues this year, it could easily lead to the first three-peat in NFL history.
