Another Texas Longhorns running back suffers season-ending knee injury

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas Longhorns’ backfield suffered another season-ending injury in training camp, the team confirmed Tuesday.

Freshman Christian Clark tore his ACL in practice Monday and will undergo surgery, the team said. He’ll be out for the entire season.

It’s the second knee injury to a running back in the past week. Sophomore CJ Baxter, the team’s No. 1 back coming into camp, suffered two knee ligament tears and will also need surgery.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian had said junior Jaydon Blue and sophomore Tre Wisner had been trending as the go-to backs following Baxter’s injury, and now there’s another question as to who will fill in after them. Freshman Jerrick Gibson looked good in the team’s scrimmage Saturday, but also “got an introduction to college football,” Sarkisian said. He also mentioned that walk-on junior Colin Page out of Austin’s Anderson High School had good reps both in the backfield and on special teams.

Sarkisian said there’s a chance that he will move a player or two to running back to help rebuild depth at the position. Receiver Ryan Niblett and linebacker Deiron Gullette are two players who could see some time in the backfield.
