More than 500 flights delayed at DIA for severe thunderstorms

More than 500 flights were delayed at Denver International Airport on Tuesday afternoon as weather forecasters predicted tornadoes, hail and severe thunderstorms in the metro region and Eastern Plains.

There were 543 delayed and 14 canceled flights at DIA as of 5:45 p.m., according to FlightAware. Arriving flights were delayed by an average of 1 hour and 7 minutes, Federal Aviation Administration officials said.

The airport is on a traffic management program because of thunderstorms, according to the FAA.

United Airlines reported the most delays, with 202 flights delayed and eight cancellations as of 5:45 p.m., according to FlightAware. Southwest Airlines reported 171 delayed flights.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the region until 1 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.
