Yankees’ top pitching prospect Chase Hampton suffers another injury

US

CHICAGO — The Yankees’ top pitching prospect, Chase Hampton, returned to the injured list at Double-A Somerset on Tuesday.

Fortunately for the righty, he is not dealing with another arm injury. Instead, it’s a groin issue, Aaron Boone confirmed before the Yankees played the White Sox.

The manager wasn’t sure about the severity of Hampton’s injury. Boone also wasn’t sure about Hampton’s season possibly being shut down, though he added that he didn’t think that would be the case.

Hampton exited his last start for the Somerset Patriots after two innings and 26 pitches on August 10. He was only two starts removed from the end of a rehab assignment after suffering a flexor strain in spring training.

The 23-year-old has pitched in seven total games across three levels this season, recording a 2.41 ERA over 18.2 innings. The 2022 sixth-round pick is considered the Yankees’ third-best prospect overall by MLB.com.

EFFROSS EARNING CONSIDERATION

It’s been a while since Scott Effross’ rehab assignment ended following back and Tommy John surgeries, but the optionable reliever has remained at Triple-A. The righty doesn’t have very good numbers there, recording a 4.86 ERA over 14 games.

But with Effross fresh off of two straight scoreless, two-inning appearances and the Yankees’ bullpen struggling, Boone said he’s on the club’s radar.

“He’s been throwing the ball better, so that’s been encouraging,” the manager said. “And I feel like we’re getting some more guys in the mix to have good options. So, yeah, Scotty’s put together some good outings here in a row. So he’s definitely in the mix and in consideration.”

ADDITIONAL UPDATES

Anthony Rizzo (broken arm) had a scan this week that showed healing, but Boone said he still has “some more to go.” The first baseman can still do baseball activities.

Jose Trevino (quad) was scheduled to play in rehab games on Tuesday and Wednesday. “Then we’ll see where we’re at,” Boone said.

A-ROD, CC ARE OLD-TIMERS

With plans to honor the 2009 World Series team, the Yankees released their expected guest list for the 76th Old-Timers’ Day, which will take place on August 24 before a game against the Rockies.

Alex Rodriguez and CC Sabathia headline the list of first-time attendees. Others representing the 2009 team include, but are not limited to, A.J. Burnett, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Nick Swisher and Mariano Rivera.

Derek Jeter is also attending for the second consecutive year after making his Old-Timers debut last season. Other participants include Boone, Bernie Williams, Bucky Dent, Orlando “El Duque” Hernández, David Cone, Tino Martinez and Joe Torre.

A few notable absences from the 2009 guest list include Brett Gardner and Mark Teixeira.

Once again, a Q&A will replace an Old-Timers’ Day game, which used to be a tradition. Suzyn Waldman and Joe Girardi, who managed the 2009 team, will lead the Q&A.
