Presidential campaign kicks into high gear

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – On the campaign trail Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate held rallies in key swing states this weekend while former president Donald Trump’s running mate Senator JD Vance did TV interviews addressing controversies in the campaign.

Senator Vance explained how he went from a ‘Never Trump’ Republican in 2016 to former president Trump’s running mate in 2024.

“I didn’t think Donald Trump would be a good president. He was a great president. Wages were rising. The world was more peaceful,” said Vance.

Vance also defended former president Trump’s comments questioning Vice President Harris’s racial identity.

“President Trump is right that she’s a chameleon. She pretends to be one thing in front of one audience. She pretends to be something different in front of another audience,” said Vance.

In the key state of Nevada, the Democratic vice-presidential candidate brought out a familiar criticism of the Trump campaign.

“Nobody’s asking for that weird crap. No one’s asking for it,” said Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Vice President Harris continued to hammer the former president on the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision about abortion.

“He intended for them to undo the protections of Roe v. Wade,” said Harris.

However, the campaigns had a rare agreement on another issue.   Vice President Harris announced support for eliminating taxes on tips, an idea floated by former president Trump in Nevada in June.

“It is my promise to everyone here when I am president, we will continue our fight for working families of America,” said Harris.

Over the weekend former president Trump posted online that he would be debating Vice President Harris three times the first one on FOX news on September 4th.

The Harris campaign says the vice president has only agreed to one debate, that’s on September 10th on ABC.
