A pedestrian is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in Worcester early Sunday morning, police said.

The victim, an adult woman, was hit on Greenwood Street around 12:26 a.m. on Sunday, the Worcester Police Department said in a statement. Police said the driver remained at the scene of the crash.

This crash is the latest of several Worcester crashes that seriously injured pedestrians, plus a crash in June that killed a 13-year-old girl. Worcester officials recently declared a “Road Safety and Traffic Violence Crisis” and called for all drivers to be more wary on the road.

A statement from the Worcester City Manager released last month said more than 2,800 car crashes have happened in Worcester so far in 2024. Ninety of those crashes involved pedestrians and cyclists.

“Making streets safer and more accommodating for all users requires more than government actions alone. As a community, we need to work together to ensure our collective safety and well-being,” the statement said. “We urge everyone to respect the rules of the road, slow down, watch for other road users, and exercise patience and restraint.”

Worcester’s Department of Transportation and Mobility announced a “Vision Zero Safety Action Plan” earlier this year, with the goal of improving street safety. The recent increase in number of crashes prompted city authorities to accelerate the plan.
