This white briefcase is actually a Honda e-bike

While most of the focus for those attending the Disney fan convention D23 involved photo ops, immersive activations and collecting exclusive merchandise, at the Honda booth, the latest technology was the star of the show.

While much of the booth was dedicated to the upcoming Honda vehicle models, including all-electric and plug-in hybrids, a bigger draw was an unassuming white suitcase that doubles as an electric bicycle.

The Honda Motocompacto is a collapsible e-bike that promises to go wherever you go.

Less than 4 inches wide when packed up, the Motocompacto can fit in the same small spaces a briefcase might, but unlike your vintage Samsonite, this briefcase can whisk you to your next destination.

  • The Honda Motocompacto, a collapsible e-bike the size of a briefcase, is shown at the Honda booth at D23 in Anaheim on Aug. 11, 2024.

The bike weighs about 41 pounds and takes around 3.5 hours to charge, according to the product listing’s spec sheet.

When it’s not folded up, the Motocompacto has a 12-mile range and a max speed of 15 mph, which it reaches in about seven seconds, Honda says. Not the most efficient or long-range of e-bikes on the market, but it’s the novelty of its compact design (and the Honda name) that sets it apart from others.

Honda says the mobility device even comes with a partner app that helps you keep track of charge level, overall battery health and a trip calculator that tells you how much juice you have left when plotting your next ride. You can also gain achievements through the app for using the Motocompacto to explore your area.

Throughout the course of the three-day weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center, D23 attendees had the opportunity to view the Motocompacto up close, pose for photos as they pretended to ride one and continue that ride by taking the bike for a “virtual spin” by scanning a QR code.

Those who visited the Honda booth at D23 also had the chance to earn a commemorative pin and a Honda-branded air freshener.

While not the typical booth one might expect to see at a convention for Disney fans, Honda has a longstanding partnership with the entertainment and theme parks giant. The historic and iconic Autopia ride at Disneyland Resort is sponsored by Honda and Disney is in the process of ditching the existing gasoline-powered cars for new EVs.

The search for the newest and most efficient technology has always been a driver for Disney innovation, spurred decades ago by Walt himself who dreamed of a “world of wondrous ideas, signifying man’s achievements.”

It’s unclear if a suitcase with wheels is what he had in mind, but it’s certainly a spirited idea.
