A 59-year-old man was clinging to life after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the FDR Drive early Saturday, police said.
It’s the second time in two months that someone was struck trying to cross the East Side highway on foot, cops said.
The victim was trying to cross the southbound lanes between Houston St. and Grand St./Williamsburg Bridge exits about 3:30 a.m. when he was hit by a passing white sedan, cops said.
First responders found the man sprawled out on the asphalt with severe injuries to his head and body. EMS rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where he remained in critical condition Saturday morning.
The driver of the white sedan never stopped, cops said. A search for the driver was underway Saturday.
It was not immediately clear if the driver knew he hit the victim, cops said. While the rain from the remnants of Hurricane Debby had ended by the time of the accident, it was still overcast and foggy in the city, according to area weather reports.
On June 25, Mary Rowell was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the FDR Drive near Houston St. — close to where Saturday’s victim was hit.
Rowell, 31, was heading home from East River Park around 12:15 a.m. Relatives believe confusing construction signs led her into oncoming traffic on the highway instead of a pedestrian pathway.
