Police shot and killed a man who was seen stabbing a woman in an Irvine neighborhood Thursday.
Irvine police responded to reports of an assault at a home near Green Tree Lane and Coral Tree Lane at around 2:50 p.m.
Arriving officers spotted the man actively attacking and stabbing a woman who was his family member on the street outside the home.
That’s when police opened fire, shooting and killing the male suspect. The female victim was also pronounced dead at the scene.
The moments leading up to the shooting, including whether the suspect was resisting police orders, were not yet released.
Police confirmed the suspect and victim were family members but did not provide more details on their relationship.
“This is definitely very tragic for our community,” said Kyle Oldoerp, an Irvine police spokesperson. “We’re committed to investigating this incident and finding out exactly why this happened.”
Thursday’s officer-involved shooting marks the second deadly incident in Irvine this week after a former caregiver was killed by police for the alleged murder of a paralyzed man.
“This is very unique for our city, to have an officer-involved shooting and to have two so close together,” Oldoerp said.
The victims’ identities for Thursday’s fatal shooting were not released as the case remains under investigation.
