Police investigating after 49 guinea pigs abandoned in Dracut

Dracut police are investigating after 49 guinea pigs were left abandoned near Beaver Brook on Monday, with the department asking for the public’s assistance with the case.

According to police, Dracut Animal Control was contacted on Monday when someone reported finding several guinea pigs on a small trail between Beaver Brook Mill and Beaver Brook, off Lakeview Avenue. When animal control responded, they found 49 guinea pigs in “lethargic and in poor condition,” according to police.

The animals were taken to the Lowell Humane Society for veterinary care, where they remain. 

“It was evident that the guinea pigs had been intentionally disposed of in a location where they had no means to fend for themselves or escape their dire situation,” Animal Control Officer Colleen Morse said in a statement. “Given the abundance of resources available for the care and rehoming of animals, such neglect and abandonment are unacceptable. This situation indicates a serious lapse in responsibility and compassion.”

Because of their medical needs, the guinea pigs are not immediately available for adoption, police said.
