MUNSTER, Ind. – The 29th annual National Night Out against crime celebration in Munster kicked off with a parade featuring first responders, veterans, members of the U.S. Army, school groups, community organizations, and businesses.

The purpose is to promote positive police and community partnerships through an evening of fun.

“On nights like tonight, it’s all about community,” said Rachel Branagan, vice president of Band Packers.

The parade ended at around 5 p.m. at the community pool, which is where the main celebration was held as people got a chance to check out the vendors, food and prizes. Residents were also invited to show support for participants.

“Police and community partnerships are very important to us in Munster. We try to work really hard throughout the year to put a lot of effort into these programs to show the public that we care and that we are here when they need us,” said Officer James Ghrist of the Munster Police Department.

Tuesday night’s festivities will be held until 8:30 p.m. That’s when fireworks are scheduled to go off.
